Reading
I love teaching phonics and helping students create a love of reading. I love when we get together as a class and have great discussions about a book, or topic we have been learning about. During whole group we will be practicing many different skills and standards that connect to the text we are reading, and in small group we will be working at your child's instructional level.
What is A.R.?
A.R. (Accelerated Reader) is a quick comprehension check after students finish reading, or listening to, a story. There are usually 5 or 10 questions per book. Your student's level will be based off of a reading test at the beginning and middle of the year.
They will also have a goal for A.R. This goal is two parts:
1. Comprehension (85%)
2. Points (the amount of books they read)
Every student will have a comprehension goal of 85%, and depending on your students ability they will have a specific amount of points to read. Book are generally worth .5 points. For example, if their goal is set at 5 points, they will need read about 10 books. Student get the full .5 points when they answer the questions correctly. This program helps keep your child on track by reading enough books at their independent level. Your child's scores and goals are personal and are not shared with other students.
