Classroom Policies
I care deeply about your student. I use many strategies from Responsive Classroom to create a community of risk-takers, problem-solvers, and caring humans. Your child's academic growth is an important to me as their social and emotional development. Each morning we start our day off with morning meeting where we will greet one another, share, have a quick activity or group game, and then read our message for that day.
Charter/ HOWLS / Class Rules
Practice only! If your student is frustrated, then please take a break from the homework for that evening and let me know. I am here to support each student, and your family. I want to work together so that homework doesn't become pulling teeth!
Math homework (assigned Monday-Thursday) is a review and should ONLY take 10 minutes. If your student has been diligently working for 10 minutes please discontinue the math sheet even if it in incomplete! I do not want any tears over homework. Let me know how it is going and how we can work together.
Reading 20 minutes each night (Monday-Friday) is the other homework assignment. If your student is not yet at an independent level, you can read to them or they can listen and follow along to a story online. There are great book to read online (tumble books) through the public library - it's free! https://ppld.org/kids/read
Classroom Snacks
They are always hungry!
We will have snack around 10:00 am each day. Students are welcome to bring a nut free snack into the classroom. I ask that students do not bring candy or sweets but instead eat a healthy option (they can each the sweets during lunch if they want to bring it). Unfortunately, students are not permitted to share food, due to allergy and health concerns. Food with nuts can still be eaten in the cafeteria. Thank you for understanding.
Water Bottles
They get thirsty!
Water bottles are welcome in the classroom and students can have them at their desk.
Personal Items
Students should not bring personal items or toys to school. This may include but is not limited to the following: toys, fidget spinner, skateboards, scooters, games, trading cards (Pokemon, sports cards). This is to ensure items are not lost or damaged. We understand that many students walk home and need to bring a cell phone to school for safely. If this is the case, the student will need to turn their cell phone off and put it in the classroom phone bin until the end of the day.
Attendance
We will start our day promptly so we have plenty of time for morning meeting. The first bell to enter the classroom is at 8:05, and the tardy bell rings at 8:15. Thank you for your support in having your student be on time for morning meeting.
If you would like to send in a birthday trinket for your student please email me at least 24 hours in advance. This will enable us to have enough time to celebrate. Please consider an alternative party trinket such as pencils, bookmark, erasers, stickers, etc. We ask that all food/treats are nut free and are from a nut free factory.
Please let me know if you have any questions! I do not check planner for notes, and email is the best way to contact me to ensure a quick response.
I'm so excited to work with you!
Charter/ HOWLS / Class Rules
- Our 2nd Grade Charter is one part of the RULER curriculum. The purpose of the Charter is to work together so we can understand and effectively deal with the spectrum of emotions and situations we experience. The HOWLS learner mindset helps to support and build District 20 Core Principles of behavior. HOWLS stands for:
Honor
Ownership
Work Hard
Lead
Safety
We will create our charter and class rules together. The pictures below are of the charter and class rules from the previous year.
